Vietnamese real estate tycoon sentenced to death in country's largest fraud case

Vietnamese real estate tycoon Truong My Lan has been sentenced to death over the country's largest ever financial fraud case.

The 67-year-old chair of real estate company Van Thinh Phat was charged with embezzling $US12.5 billion ($19.1 billion) — nearly 3 per cent of the country's 2022 GDP.

Prosecutors said on Thursday the total damages caused by the scam amounted to $US27 billion ($41 billion).
